Disneyland’s ‘Lilly Belle’ Presidential Train Car

Our family had the opportunity to ride in Lily Belle on our most recent trip. It had been something that we’d looked forward to for a while, and the experience was even better than the anticipation!

To ride on Lilly Belle, inquire at Main Street Station. Ask a conductor if there would be a possibility of riding on Lilly Belle. From what I understand, if a guide can be spared, you’ll likely be allowed.

Waiting for Lilly Belle at Disneyland’s Main Street Station

In our case, we had to wait for about 20 minutes for the anticipated start of a shift for someone to be available to accompany us.

The Lilly Belle has served as a special car to take VIPs in, and tickets used to be required. Our cast member/conductor/guide Courtenay arrived and gave us two tickets - what a great souvenier!

Eve in Walt’s Chair on Lilly Belle

Here’s Cast Member Courtenay with Eve in Walt’s chair. According to the cast member, that was Walt’s chair and the love seat beyond was where Lillian would sit. It’d be great to confirm if that was the case! I made sure to take a brief sit in it myself just in case!

While preparing for the trip, I’d learned that one of the reasons for having a required escort was that guests have often taken mementos. What a shame! Things like that are why regular people aren’t allowed to do “VIP” things… It was a real privilege to be able to ride Lilly Belle - and we’re grateful for the Disneyland Resort decision makers, whoever they are, that continue to let regular folks ride Lilly Belle on request.

 Lillian Disney’s Smoking Jacket?

The Lilly Belle had been a smoking car - we were told that this was Lillian Disney’s smoking jacket. Walt and Lillian both smoked. As some may know, Walt died of lung cancer. The effects of smoking weren’t as widely known in years past. Remember, Mickey Mouse was created in 1923 - Walt served in World War I. We’ve sure come a long way on understanding the effects of cigarettes.

Hidden Mickey on Lilly Belle in Disneyland

Even with 4 hints, the conductor had to point out the hidden Mickeys. According to her, this is the last swatch of the original carpet intended for Walt’s apartment in the park.

We’re grateful for the opportunity! Thanks cast member Courtenay, Disneyland Railroad, and the Disneyland executives who allow guests to ride!

PS - While researching the ride, I found this advertisement. Many of my relatives will recognize this backdrop - my grandpa & grandma, his brothers and their wives have a great portrait they took together. So much fun! I wish the Polaroid center was still around. Oh well, Photopass photographers will have to do!

  1. I just wanted to say that I found your site by searching for the lilly belle. My two girls and I along with their grandpa just took a first trip to disneyland this past week. We were lucky to have been asked by a conductor to sit in the lilly bell.
I realized that I took photos of the car,but forgot to take a picture of the carpet. Would it be possible to get in contact with you about obtaining copies of it? or having a picture sent to me via email?
We were never told about the carpet’s history..
    thank you so much,
    Courtney from CA

  2. What are the best quit smoking products that are available in the market? I’m planning to stop smoking one of these days…soon!

  3. Thank you so much for this information! My husband and I stayed at Disneyland Resort for our anniversary this past weekend. As annual pass holders who always have our two kids and a stroller with us, we wanted to make it a different experience by ourselves. I had wondered a couple weeks how you got on the Lilly Belle and I found the answer here! We had a great time and felt like VIP guests! Courtnay was actually our tour guide as well.
    Thank you for the info!

  4. Thanks for posting these pictures and your memories. I took my granddaughter Gwen this last Saturday (9/26/09) to the park. I am a annual passholder and I have had the experience of being in Walt’s Apartment once. But this time conductor Jackie asked where we were headed and the next thing I know me and my granddaughter was being escorted on the Lily Belle. This was such a treat! I can confirm that the carpet in the Lily Belle is the same as in the Apartment.

  5. I was just at Disneyland yesterday. Although I did not get to ride in the Lilly Belle. I was given some information on when the best time to inquire about a ride in the car. A guest who has been on the train said that the best time to ask is between the hours of 2 and 3 in the afternoon. That is when there are most likely extra cast members who can accommodate you and sit with you while you take a ride. So there is a hint. My friend and I plan on coming back sometime soon, as we are annual pass holders and go for a VIP ride.
